The Educational Leadership Consortium of Manhattanville College's School of Education offers this forum to assist school leaders to compile with the new AARP regulations, while building leadership capacity and plan for succession. Regional districts are facing large numbers of retirements and departures, leaving a void in their leadership and presenting real staffing challenges. This forum will feature a panel that will share the successes and opportunities of strong succession planning and the steps panel members have taken to establish long-range plans. Facilitated discussions will help districts come to a fuller conception of their succession plans, while simultaneously identifying areas that need more attention.

Opening Session:
· Regional Research on Succession Planning - Findings and promising practices will be shared.
Presenter: Dr. Kathy Rockwood, Associate Professor, Manhattanville College.
· Promoting Teacher Leadership—How can district leaders develop a supportive culture, a well conceived decision-making model, and related structures to promote teacher leadership?
Presenter: Dr. Barbara Walkley, Interim Director of Professional Development, SW BOCES,
former Asst. Superintendent for Curriculum, Staff Development and Instruction at Mahopac CSD.
· Developing a Leadership Academy—How can district leaders develop a comprehensive professional development system for school leaders that addresses the varied needs of aspiring, novice and experienced leaders? How can professional development be a priority within this fiscal environment?
Presenter: Dr. Ellen Flanagan, Deputy Superintendent, Greenwich Public Schools.
· Challenges to Leadership Sustainability—How can district leaders anticipate and respond proactively to
administrator turnover? Using White Plains as a case example, discussion will focus on a variety of planning/problem solving considerations such as: systems that were in place, those that had to be developed, union issues, community confidence, and lessons learned.
Presenter: Dr. Lenora Boehlert, Asst. Superintendent of Human Resources, White Plains Public SD.
Closing Session:
· Developing a Succession Plan - What are the steps that districts should take in developing a comprehensive succession plan? What promising business practices can benefit districts?
Presenter: Dr. William Rothwell, Penn State University Professor and international expert and consultant
in the area of succession planning.
